Amanda McKenzie started this petition to Lauderdale County Residents

Residents of Lauderdale County:

Recently an audio clip of our long-standing sheriff, Steve Sanders, has been released to the public. The clip contains audio of Sheriff Sanders using offensive racial slurs to describe Lauderdale County and its citizens. When questioned by News Channel 3, Sheriff Sanders openly admitted that he made the comments. Sheriff Sanders attempted to issue an "apology" on the ground that these racial slurs "slipped out" and that he "didn't know his officers were recording him." Sheriff Sanders then attempted to excuse his comments by claiming that he has "a lot of black friends." Sanders knew that the good residents of Lauderdale County would not stand idly by, but call for his immediate resignation.  Sheriff Sanders replied to this demand by stating that "normal people don't want him to resign," with no explanation as to what he meant by "normal people." He has also told News Channel 3 that he currently has no plans to resign as sheriff.

Based upon the last US Census, African Americans make up 34.8% of Lauderdale County. That's over 1/3 of the county's population that Sheriff Sanders openly used derogatory racial slurs to describe. Lauderdale County and its residents deserve better than a sheriff who believes it is acceptable to use racial slurs when he is under the impression he will not be caught and punished for such a terrible and offensive act.

An apology, even one better than has already been issued, is not enough. If you are a resident of Lauderdale County and would like to make a change for the better, please consider signing this petition demanding that Sheriff Sanders resign, effective immediately.
