This is becoming a problem at East View High School in the Georgetown Independent School District. Many students don’t want to go to Pep-Rallies. Either they don’t want to go because they have mental health issues that make it difficult to be in loud and largely populated crowds or the noise can potentially hurt their ears. Recently at the latest Pep-Rally there were flashing lights that some students have complained about along with all the noise. There is an alternative for not going to the Pep-Rally and that is to sit quietly in the cafeteria separated from everybody and doing work while being watched, essentially an ISS for “not showing your school spirit”. Some students have had panic attacks there from stress and no one was allowed to go help them as the teachers got mad at the kids trying to help. When students bring up the issues they have with this some teachers have cut them off while they tried to explain mental health and told them to stop talking. The disrespect from some of the teachers to the students stating their problems goes against what this school stands for. Some students have been hiding from teachers on Pep Rally days as a result of the lack of care the staff has shown for them and their problems. This is a problem because students who get away from the teachers will not be looked for or count in role call because the school believes all students are in the gym or the cafeteria, this is something that cannot be fixed with more rules, it should be solved by listening and understanding the students more. We want to change our school for the better, and to start we need to be heard.
