ATSC broadcasters transmit their signals in the VHF (very high frequency) band, with a range of 48 MHz through 72 MHz for channels 2 through 4, 76 MHz through 88 MHz for channels 5 and 6, then 174 MHz through 216 MHz for channels 7 through 13. Each channel is broken down into sub-bands. In digital broadcasting, these sub-bands are used to transmit different resolution versions of the same channel; they formerly were used to send color and audio signals during the era of analog television broadcasts. There is a second band of channels from 14 through 83 using UHF (ultra high frequency) that are also broadcast over the air.

The MPEG4 standard is a combined container format that holds audio and video content that's synchronized, so that the sound plays synchronously with the video signal.
