I am signing this petition, because I DONT AGREE WITH CHANGING THE NAME!! I was part of the first group of students who went to the school! I was a JV cheerleader, and Varsity cheerleader. The name should NOT be changed, INSTEAD use the monies that would be going to the legalities, and maintenance preparation should go to the school, the staff the students!! There is so many memories!! I am sure the people of the school board that chose the name Onate High School, took much consideration for choosing the name!! Now, people of the newer generations want to change . Taking down statues and removing names from buildings that were named as a tribute of important people that made a difference in the world, I say it is preposterous!! For why do we teach history, if the people of today want any and all statues, names,, monuments etc removed,, that shows respect or gratitude, to a memory wether it was good, or bad it still happened, removal of names, statues, and monuments doesn't take the facts away that it still happened!! #classof95
I am a graduate of Oñate and don’t feel that we should change the name. Not only does the name change make no difference, but the school district should not be wasting funds when we already don’t have the money to spend.
Oñate forever. We gave Oñate its own history and have no correlation. Change Mayfield because that ship brought disease infested people that would eventually do the same as Oñate!!
Well I saw this a little late. Very sad. This survey and the one put out by LCPS was not taken into consideration. It is apparent that certain politicians in NM pushed their agenda on our High School. It is sad that my son will have a diploma with an alien name as the High School. He graduates 2021. When he decided to go to Onate, I was so proud. Out of our 5 boys, he was the one to want Onate. We are not in Onate district. I graduated from Onate in 1990. When I hear Onate, I remember my High School years, the games, the wonderful teachers, Mr. Lafferty, Mr. Montoya and Mr. Melendez. Now I add to that and I have the last 3 years of walking the halls that were not open for our class. I have watched my son develop into a great guy under the watchful guidance of Mr. Schapekham and Luis Lucero. The past 32 years has been a beginning of a great High School. The majority of students, parents and staff want the name to stay the same. Unlike the 1500-1600's, Onate High School's History is recent 1989-present, memorable and represent with pride, honor and the bond of Familia.
