Skateboarding is a sport enjoyed by many kids around the world. Skateboarding is in the Olympics so, why shouldn't we have it as a school sport in New Jersey? In fact, California has 20 schools that have already signed up to add skateboarding as a school sport. With the use of indoor skateparks skateboarding could be a year-round sport. Schools wouldn't have to create facilities because there are plenty of skateparks scattered around the state. Some benefits of skateboarding are burning calories, endurance, flexibility, precision, stress relief, helps with staying fit, and helps build confidence. Skateboarding is a relatively safe sport. Statistically, skateboarding is safer than basketball and football. Football can cause strains, sprains, fractures, dislocations, and concussions.  Basketball can cause injuries to the hips, head/face, and wrist/hand, ankle sprains, jammed fingers, knee injuries, deep thigh bruising, facial cuts, and foot fractures. 74% of skateboarding injuries involve contusions, sprains, and fractures. The majority of injuries are to the extremities, while 20% of injuries are to the head. Around 3.1% of injuries are serious head injuries such as blunt trauma or even skull fracture. In conclusion, skateboarding is a relatively safe sport, has many benefits, and very popular.
