At Marist High School's upperclassman homecoming on October 9, 2021, several students carried out an act of racial injustice. Recordings were taken of said students kneeling and booing during a Hispanic song in defiance of Latinx culture. They were completely disrespectful, creating a harmful environment at the dance for many latinx students. So far staff has sent out the same scripted announcement without even an apology to the students affected by this act of racial injustice. The way the school is handling this situation is complacent and completely unacceptable- they have created a space where students are divided, and are encouraging this behavior to continue by not taking the proper steps to hold these racist actions accountable. Marists staff team has completely disregarded the thoughts and feelings of their Latinx and POC students based on the actions they have taken. They need to seek proper disciplinary action to properly counteract the blatantly racist actions of their students. The Latinx/POC students of Marist are people- people who deserve to be in an inclusive and welcoming space, which Marist has not achieved. We have created this petition to prevent further injustice towards the Latinx community at Marist High School and have the students at the very least suspended or attend detentions for their actions. The Latinx and POC community of Marist High School deserves justice, and they deserve a safe learning environment just like anyone else.
