Suicide Prevention on the Bay Bridge

Suicide Prevention on the Bay Bridge
Why this petition matters
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, or the Gov. William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge, of Maryland was built in 1952, over 68 years ago, at around 200 feet high and 4.3 miles long with narrow, shoulder-less lanes designed for two-way head-on traffic with no median, as well as low Jersey Walls and open steel barriers being added in 1986. There have been 15 vehicles to plunge off the bridge resulting in 18 fatalities, as well as over 100 suicides since the construction of the bridge. Many drivers have also accounted for panic attacks and tunneling vision while driving on the bridge, some even making use of a service to drive cars across the bridge for them. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is also listed as number 1 for scariest bridges in America. Enough is enough. Sign the petition to get Governor Hogan’s attention to build higher, less open barriers, medians for two-way traffic, and room for shoulder lanes that better prevent head-on collisions, cars going off the bridge, disabling anxiety and phobia for drivers, and suicides, as well as other suicide prevention methods and signs with the number for the suicide hotline. Too many lives have been lost for this bridge to continue to be so dangerous in so many ways.
