On Tuesday December 1, 2020 a pedestrian in a wheelchair was trying to cross in a marked crosswalk on North Point Road in Edgemere, Maryland. The vehicle devastatingly did not stop for this Pedestrian and therefore he was hit and killed. Along with this incident there have also been other fatal pedestrians hit along this specific area of North Point Road.

This stretch of North Point Road has THREE SCHOOLS, a pharmacy, a church, a convenience store, a senior citizen independent living facility, post office, a fire department, and the communities only/main grocery store all within the same block with THREE LABELED CROSSWALKS. Vehicles speed along this roadway daily ignoring the speed limit and NOT STOPPING for pedestrians. The majority of usage being students, the elderly, and the disabled.

With the increase of new developments in the community both residential and commercial WE NEED TO IMPLEMENT INSTALLING NEW TRAFFIC SLOWING  DEVICES ON THIS ROAD. Please sign to show your support to protect lives and decrease the statistics of anyone's loved one being the next victim of something like what happened on December 2nd.

With the schools being virtual we should take advantage of this time to get these lifesaving traffic slowing devices installed before there is another devastating news headline or life lost.

Ultimately the state highway department will decide which structures they are able to install, but in the meanwhile by signing this we can show the abundance of URGENT concern from the people of our community and highlight the how strongly we care about this Pedestrian safety issue.

Listed below are some examples of speed structures that could drastically prove to be beneficial if we pursue to voice our concern as a community to have these installed.

Rapid flashing rectangular beacons, or standard flashing sign beacons are used to slow traffic and improve safety by bringing greater driver attention to the posted traffic signs. The flashing beacons can be used to increase awareness of speed limit signs, school zone signs, crosswalk signs or wherever driver compliance is critical.
