Miriam S started this petition to The Wall Street Journal Lance Morrow

On Aug 2, 2020, Lance Morrow (a columnist for the Wall Street Journal) wrote an opinion piece entitled "Dawn of the Woke" in which he fundamentally denied transgender and non-binary people's right to exist. Morrow wrote that woke modern people are deluding themselves that, "nature's basic working arrangement - sex, male and female, the business of procreation that ensures the survival of the species - dissolves in a frolicsome alphabet soup of identities; human meaning works itself out...in the territory that lies south of the navel, in restless genital experiments. Men become women on their own say-so, and may bear children, if they choose...even pronouns have become narcissistically discretionary." This is absolutely abhorrent. Morrow claims to stand for free debate, but he is actively creating an environment that shuts out LGBTQ+ people. How can we have a respectful conversation when he disrespects another human's mere presence in the world?

Morrow has a pattern of publishing blatant prejudice. Last year he wrote a piece saying that we shouldn't even bother discussing reparations. In "The Danger of Debating Reparations for Slavery", he described the prominent Black writer Ta Nehisi-Coats as "too eloquent for his own good".

While everyone gets to have an opinion, this kind of glaring prejudice deeply undermines any kind of intellectual discourse. Each of us knows and/or is someone who is LGBTQ+, who is not white, who has been excluded, who has been shut out of society. No matter what your identity, you deserve to be as you are and to have a safe and loving community. It is not radical to say that people should get to live in accordance with who they are. Please sign and share this petition in order to demand that Lance Morrow apologizes for his comments and pledges to reflect on his own bias. Let's show the world that we stand together against hate and ignorance!
