Rossendale schools to prioritise Rossendale children

As parents of Waterfoot, Bacup and the surrounding areas we would like to see Lancashire County Council change the admissions policies for Rossendale High Schools, allowing children from within Rossendale to get priority over children from outside the area. Schools such as Haslingden and Whitworth (funded by Lancashire County Council) take children from outside Lancashire (for example from Bury and Rochdale Council) leaving parents in Waterfoot, Bacup and the surrounding area with no other choice but to send their children to Fearns. This is due to there not being enough places at other High Schools in Rossendale because they have been allocated to children from outside Lancashire.
Some statistics on Fearns Community Sports College:-
- Fearns High Schools is the 2nd worst Council maintained High school in England on progress 8 and in the bottom 0.5% of all mainstream secondary schools
- Fearns was rated inadequate in 2014 and again in 2016
- Only 6% of pupils reach expected levels of achievement
We would love to send our children to our local school, set in beautiful surroundings but it's too big a risk at the moment. We would also like to see Fearns improve and offer children the standard of education they deserve. However, parents are being left with no choice but to home educate, leave the area or send their children to private schools or to schools out of the area.
