Ella Sutherland started this petition to Lamoni High School

For the past two months, the Confederate Battle Flag has been worn daily - with little to no exceptions - by students attending Lamoni High School. This petition is made to in no way take away the rights given to the students by the first amendment, but to follow in the footsteps of schools who have banned swastikas or gang symbols in their dress codes.

Lamoni is located in Iowa, and while the notion of Southern Pride is often associated with the display of the Confederate Battle Flag, Iowa was a member of the Union during the civil war. Southern Pride is not a valid argument for the wearing of this symbol.

The KKK has used the Confederate Battle Flag in association with multiple hate crimes, the targets of which are including but not limited to African Americans, people of mixed race, immigrants, LGBTQ+ identifying individuals, and people of certain religious groups. Lamoni High School has all of these types of people.

As an LGBTQ+ student attending Lamoni High School, I do not feel comfortable attending school on a daily basis when I know the symbol will be displayed. If you can tell me I can't wear a crop top or Swastika in the school dress code, why not the Confederate Flag? Please help me rid this symbol from the halls of the school, because adding to a school dress code does not violate the first amendment.
