Allow PTOs to use AB2073 to raise funds for LUSD schools

Assembly Bill 2073 (“AB 2073”), which became law on January 1, 2015, creates an exception to the prohibition against the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages on the grounds of K-12 district facilities if the beverages are acquired, possessed, used, sold, or consumed under a license or permit obtained for special events held at a time when students are not on the grounds.
The above law was passed with districts like ours in mind -- small, underfunded, and without options for hosting events. Whether you personally drink alcohol or not, most see the fundraising benefits of an adult-only event that allows its donors to have a glass of wine or a beer. Currently, our school foundations and booster clubs have to pay thousands of dollars to rent facilities out of town if they want to host such an event. This is less than ideal for many reasons -- fewer people attend, the money our schools so badly need is spent on facilities, and we're always a little nervous about folks making the drive back home. Holding such events in a multi-purpose room at one of our own sites solves all three issues and benefits our kiddos and all that we want to do for them.
