I am at a loss. My parents run a very small, family owned dairy farm that is on its fifth generation. It has never made a lot of money; it is a labor of love for my dad and brother. Yesterday, they got a call from the company that hauls the milk from the farm to the processing plant and were advised that they can no longer pick up the milk that is being produced. They will have to DUMP the milk down the drain.

The explanation was that with schools and restaurants being closed, the plant is at capacity and can't handle any more product. That means that, like many other businesses during this crisis, expenses are going to continue while ALL income will be lost. They will have to continue feeding and milking the cows regardless of what they do with the milk. Electricity and water bills are extremely high on a dairy farm. Feed isn't cheap. This is not a situation unique to my family, but...

here is the real kicker: a viable food product is literally being washed down the sewer. With all the people out here struggling to feed themselves, I would think the USDA (which oversees the food stamp program) would find a way to buy up this over supply and provide it to needy citizens via the WIC program or other mechanism. It would help two groups - the farmers with product that will otherwise go to waste and families who need assistance with food.

Please sign today to ask senators to come up with a viable solution!
