Friends of Waughop Lake started this petition to Lakewood City Council

For many years, Waughop Lake in Fort Steilacoom Park has been plagued by toxic algae blooms resulting from sediment accumulated through long term discharge of animal waste from slaughtered animals, manure, and human sewage. The City of Lakewood approved a plan to treat the lake with alum in 2019, but treatment was canceled.

However, the blue green algae bloom in Waughop Lake was much lighter in the 2019 season than in the past. There also appears to be an increase in aquatic vegetation in the lake. These changes have taken place since the sewer discharge problem from Pierce College was remediated.

Considering these observations it may be the ecology of the lake is changing. We are concerned the costly alum treatment scheduled for application in 2020 may be unnecessary and ineffective. We ask the City to please postpone the treatment for a couple seasons while the lake can be monitored by volunteers for changes in pH, nutrient loading, algae growth, and plant growth. We also ask that a long-term plan to remove the sediment be developed. We support monitoring Waughop Lake.
