I have had mental health issues for almost 35 years.  I have seen every type of therapist, counselor, doctor, and social worker in the Durham Region, and all had a wait list that put my mental and physical health in jeopardy.  During these wait times, I have ended up in hospital and in danger.  This is my story, but I am not alone.

In January, I found Durham Mental Health Services (DMHS).  I have come farther in my wellness journey since January than I have in over 20 years.  I have even been able to get off the 12-month waiting list for a psychiatrist (which I was put on again because of staffing changes - I have spent half my life waiting for care).

Since finding DMHS and its services (along with their collaboration with Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences Recovery College), my life has CHANGED.  I'm not sure where I would be had the bed not been available at the Crisis House for me in January, and the follow up groups that have filled my weeks are healing my mind.  Knowing that their services, exactly as they are, are still available provides me with comfort and peace.

Since February 1st, I have noticed some changes; changes that I can only presume have originated with Lakeridge Health taking over the management of DMHS.  So far, I'm already scared.  So many changes already.  What is to come?

DMHS and its Crisis beds are a fantastic, its Peer Support Team is caring, understanding, and so uniquely helpful, and they are an immeasurable resource to the Durham Region community, and I, along with those signing below, beg for you to please consider minimizing or eliminating any changes that you may be thinking of for DMHS.  Right now, I could not live without it.  If anything, their resources should be expanded.  The community needs it.  Our community deserves it.
