This petition is a request from LCSD families to make available an all-remote learning option alongside the proposed hybrid option for families not comfortable with in-person learning for the 2020/21 school year.

Lakeland Central School District has released their plan for the 20-21 school year. The plan highlights a hybrid learning model that requires all students to attend in-person classes for part of the week.

An option for virtual learning is reserved for students who can furnish doctors notes for pre-existing conditions.  This stipulation does not address the needs and concerns of families who have high risk adults in the home; the many parents who depend on elderly relatives to provide childcare (now more than ever);, guardians who will face challenges securing childcare with the hybrid schedule; or who are simply not comfortable sending their children into the school building when we still know so little about Covid-19, particularly how it may spread in a school setting and how it may affect even otherwise healthy children.

As parents we are requesting an all-remote learning option be made available to every family in the district, regardless of the reason for their choice.

While we understand that the plan for re-opening schools must be fluid and is already an enormously complicated undertaking, allowing parents to opt-in to 100% remote learning now will allow the district to better accommodate students and faculty who will attend and teach in-person classes and those who cannot or will not.  Allowing students to work from home will also enable safer transportation plans, and provide families with the accommodations they need to make vital arrangements for childcare without interrupting instruction.

Without this option families with health and safety concerns will be forced to withdraw their children from the district.  We believe this will create an unnecessary burden on families within our school community who are ill-equipped to hire private tutors, form homeschool “pods,” or take on the challenge of teaching, and this will consequently deepen the profound inequities among the diverse populations served by Lakeland. We believe more learning options for families benefits the entire community. We are also very concerned about further interruption to the continuity of instruction across grade cohorts, and the funding repercussions as families begin withdrawing their children for the 2020-2021 school year.

We are all in this together, and we hope LCSD will act quickly to meet the needs of our district families.
