Metal detectors or bag checks will be a deterrent in bringing weapons to school. Insist Lake Orion implements one of these changes.

Metal detectors or bag checks are not a one time solution to the mental health and gun safety crisis we are undergoing in our country, here our community. It is a step we can take now, while we work on the latter. Let's do what we can keep our families and friends safe, they deserve it. 

Clear backpacks are a step towards safer schools. However, it would be so easy to conceal something between items, in a jacket, a change of gym clothes. Metal Detectors will help. 

We trust the Oakland County Police and their efforts to be more present in the schools, to increase safety. Having more officers around may be beneficial, but we cannot realistically expect them to prevent or respond fast enough to stop an incident in a massive multi-floor school with 1,000+ students. It takes only minutes. Bag checks will help.

Door locks will help some students stay safe during an event of an active shooter. But what about students in the hall, bathroom or a fishbowl classroom? Metal detectors will help. 

Only 5 minutes changed everything in Oxford, forever. As we begin the long road of grief and healing with our sister community, it's important not to hesitate taking all of the necessary precautions to keep our loved ones safe. 

2021 has been a record high year for school shootings.  Since November 30, 2021 there have been 28 school shootings country wide. Things are different now. This was not a major issue a few decades ago. It is now. "It won't happen here" is not enough. Teacher training is not enough. Metal detectors or bag checks will help. 

Students and teachers don't deserve to wonder if today will be their last. How can we expect them to succeed academicly when they are concerned about their safety. It's not normal. Other districts use metal detectors and bag checks. What are we waiting for?  

Threats of school violence were made across Oakland County, multiple in Lake Orion. Taking every step we can to ensure the safety of our children, siblings, friends and family is essential.
