Cities around the country are embracing Tiny Homes. Discussions on how this new housing product fits into communities and codes are beginning. Lake Dallas can and should be on the forefront of this emerging housing option.
Average number of people/household has been dropping for 50 years (now at 2.6 people/household) though homes are larger than ever. This is not a sustainable model of housing for our increasing population.
TINY HOMES ON WHEELS
What they aren't: Conventional travel trailer or mobile home.
What they are: Just like a traditional home only on a much smaller scale. They have kitchens, bedrooms, lofts and bathrooms. They are built using traditional home building methods, not RV building methods. They are meant to be a full time residence. Each home is unique and aesthetically pleasing with high end finish outs.
What sort of person would choose to live Tiny? Its not for everyone and thats ok. Common tiny home residents include young professionals freshly graduated from college starting their careers. Families looking to be closer together, who generally spend most of their time outside--this housing option allows families much more financial freedom to save for college funds, travel and retirement. Seniors are also a large segment of the current Tiny House population, living on a fixed income is not easy and tiny living allows for seniors to have financial security.
This community will be on the forefront of an emerging housing market and will position Lake Dallas as a forward thinking city that draws people from all over Texas and the rest of the country. That alone will increase foot traffic on Main Street and encourage new and exciting businesses to open doors in our Downtown District. We have already thought of several city-wide events that we can organize to capitalize on tourism oppurtunities related to a Tiny Home Community. This Community will also increase the tax-base of what is currently an empty lot.
We have worked very hard writing a suggested ordinance and community guidelines that will protect this Pocket Neighborhood and the city of Lake Dallas for years to come. Highlight of guidelines include: required inspections (at the tiny owners expense) every 5 years--failure to comply results in removal from the community, mandatory covering of trailer and wheels (if applicable), no smoking in the community and SEVERAL other small details that will keep the community beautiful and vibrant for years to come.
The homes will each have a personal yard and in the middle of the community there will be common grounds complete with square foot garden, fire pit and picnic area.
Please give us your signature if you believe residents and prospective residents should have the freedom to live in home size that works for them and if you think this community would be a positive change for the City of Lake Dallas.
