At LAHS, Mr.Mcfarlene spends up to 30 minutes every class teaching philosophical content, or reading books about life philosophy out loud. This content is often (more often than not) implicitly, and occasionally explicitly religious advice, including bible quotes and references to Christianity. Not only is this content not related to Physical Education, but students are quizzed on this content, and can lose 30 or more percent of their daily grade from not getting these questions correct.

Schools in the United States are secular by law, and teaching this content in classes is both illegal and can make many students highly uncomfortable.

Examples of this include:
- Students getting an 'F' for not knowing "The meaning of life" after an in-class philosophical lecture
- Bible references

- Mr. Mcfarlene talking about his out-of school religious life.
