Taiwo Onayemi started this petition to Lagos state government and

Iwalewa died. Iwalewa was raped, resulting in pregnancy. Iwalewa would not want to have the baby, because not only is she not psychological ready for the pregnancy, she is not financially capable of tending to a baby. But the the Nigeria laws would not permit people in her situation to have safe abortion. In a bid to find a solution, she was advised to visit a supposed physician who turned out to be a quack. Iwalewa died from the complications of the procedure wrought by the quack doctor.

According to studies, she is of the 40 percent of an estimated 610,000 women - mothers, daughters, sisters, and aunties, and friends - who were killed in the hands of fake doctors because of the laws restricting safe abortion in Nigeria.

Operating from Lagos State, Marie Stopes, an international NGO providing support to Nigerian women (as millions of others across the world) by making contraceptives and safe abortion available to them, steps in. In 2018 alone, the organisation saved 710,313 women who accessed Marie Stopes' safe abortion, prevented 1,402,151 unwanted pregnancies and distributed over 3,000,000 contraceptives through Marie Stopes International. Marie Stopes saves Nigerian women lives and makes them lead much happier and productive lives. But some individuals are against this.

It is for this reason that you are called on and requested to sign and share this petition to enable Marie Stopes continue, as well as expand, its interventions in Nigeria so that our daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, and aunts and female friends can have access to trained medical personnel and doctors. Our women deserve better reproductive health, every one of them deserve a fulfilling life. Let our women have a choice!
