Stop the increase of toll Tariff by LCC

The Lekki Concession Company (LCC) was set up in April 2006, but it could only access long term funding for the construction of the Lekki - Epe Expressway only in August 2008. It was set up using the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model of funding and the BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer) model for ownership. It was supposed to be for a period of 30years at a cost of N50 billion. The road construction was supposed to be world class, with a proper side drainage, street lights, traffic lights, road signage, proper bus stops integrated with a pedestrian bridge and a management department responsible for maintenance of the road.

Nine years down the line, the road isn't near completion and most of the deliverable hasn't been implemented but the LCC has decided to increase the toll tariff without any regard for us the commuters who pay these tariffs. These commuters are real people with real problems other than payment of toll tariffs. Lagos is one of the top three most expensive cities to live in Nigeria. With recession in Nigeria, people now spend more to survive and a lot of Lagosians lost their jobs and those with jobs are barely surviving on their income. We have people living in Eti-osa whose monthly income is below N30,000, and i don't know how they survive.

We all take the Lekki toll gate to and from work and we can see that the road construction so far, its clear that its far from world class with lots of pothole at different points notable the gully after the Lekki Phase 1 roundabout heading to Marwa. There were no side drainage's in the along the Lekki- Epe Expressway and the drainage being built now came as an afterthought. The street lights are almost always unlit leaving the roads unsafe to commuters. The simple solution would have been solar powered street lights but LCC doesn’t think green.  The traffic lights sometimes doesn’t work and commuters are at the risk of an accident, pedestrians find it difficult to cross the busy road because they fear being knock down by an oncoming vehicle. It also causes a traffic jam that keep us all on the road for longer hours causing bodily stress and health risks. LCC cant increase the Lekki and Ikoyi link bridge toll tariffs without putting these amenities in place.

We can no longer do nothing and expect or hope that things will change. We pay our taxes but that not enough the Lagos state government find ways to squeeze money out of us with this kind of increases. We must hold the government accountable for our taxes and tariffs we pay. The toll tariffs should be coming down now after nine years and especially when the project isn’t yet 35% completed. They have unnecessarily prolonged completion of this project but have used the money to build the second toll plaza by Chevron. Toll tariffs will be increased by 70% come November 8, 2017, but I have an answer for all of us who say they can pay or take the alternate route. Bus fares will go up and many commuters will be stranded, don’t think about the few but think about the many who will suffer from this injustice. Our income hasn’t gone up nor has inflation gone down, so we must refuse to pay this extortion by LCC.

You may ask the question how can I be part of this? Firstly, you can start by signing this petition that will be delivered to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode. Secondly, you can join a townhall meeting which we are starting to discussing the toll increase, transparency of the PPP, the increasing traffic jam, abuse of the road by public transport buses, visible refuse dumps that pose a health risk and poor and nonexistent drainage system which affect all our lives. Thirdly, you can spread the word so more people get to know, sign, support and we can demand a solution that alleviate the pain we all feel.

Join the Conversation on twitter using the Hashtag #StopLCCTollExtortion. We can sit down in the comfort of our homes or offices and complain about this increase or we do something about it, WE MUST GET OUR VOICES HEARD. Sign the petition Now.
