Since 2016, Lafayette Parish and surrounding areas have been profoundly affected by flash flooding. In August of 2016, more than 1,500 homes, businesses, and structures flooded due to record rainfall. Acadiana is facing a severe growing problem with the drainage systems.
The Lafayette Consolidated Government’s mission statement is to provide for the Engineering, Construction and Maintenance of Buildings, Streets, Bridges and Drainage Systems and Fleet Maintenance for Vehicles, as well as providing a quality infrastructure and environment in an efficient cost-effective manner. The people of Lafayette, Youngsville, Broussard, and Carencro, as well as many other areas are facing hard times. Families are facing multiple floods within one year, consequently seeing a 500% increase in flood insurance as well as damages that have been caused due to the flooding. This is not a cost-effective manner.
The wonderful people of Acadiana always work hard to rebuild when devastating events happen but we are asking help from the government this time by: Cleaning and clearing the ditches and drainage, digging more drainage ditches to help drain water. More coolies if necessary. We are also requesting the process in which these developers of neighborhoods, businesses, and any structures are using to insure the operation is allowing the proper drainage to occur. We the people also want to know what is the plan going forward from local government and state officials to improve the flood situation in and around Acadiana. Flooding of this magnitude is unacceptable in Acadiana and surrounding areas especially with our hard-working tax dollars being paid to the state of Louisiana.
Citizens of Acadiana will appreciate your quick response on work being done and answers to fix this problem that is a concern for all of us. We know the Lafayette Consolidated Government won’t let us down!
