Lafayette and West Lafayette Indiana City Government: Establish a Safe Passing Distance Between Motor Vehicles and Bicycles
Bicycle transportation helps reduce parking demand and motor vehicle emissions while promoting improved health through exercise. The current Indiana State laws and Lafayette and West Lafayette ordinances mandate that bicycles be operated on roadways in observance of ordinary traffic regulations. As such, it only makes sense that if specific bicycle facilities (lanes and paths) cannot be constructed in a timely manner to protect and facilitate the safe and viable use of bicycles as a healthy mode of transportation and recreation, then an ordinance must be put in place instructing drivers of motor vehicles to only overtake or pass a bicyclist when there is a safe distance of no less than three (3) feet between the motor vehicle and the bicycle.
