We spend about 7 hours a day at school and about 5 of those hours are done working. Then, after working for all this time we get to go home. Yay! But what do we have to do when we go home? Homework. Hours of homework. Homework that we have to do instead of going outside, hanging out with family, or enjoying ourselves. Homework that if we don’t complete perfectly, we get bad grades. Bad grades that can affect where we go to high school and that can affect where we go to college and that can affect what we do in our later life. It’s not healthy for kids to be pushing their brains for hours and hours without a significant amount of time to take a break. This generation gets a lot of hate for always being inside on electronics instead of being outside playing. Actually, we aren’t always inside doing these things. We are usually doing homework. And when we are inside on electronics, it’s because we don’t have time to use them on weekdays where we have homework. Where do we draw the line between ‘wanting to make sure we know the information’ and ‘taking over our entire out of school life’? We should be using our after school time to try new things and engage in extra curriculars. These are experiences and opportunities we won’t be handed to in our future. Our school is an IB school and we are being taught to balance our social life with our in school life. Staying up until midnight working on homework does not sound balanced to me. Our hope is that we could at least have more in school projects and long term work in school instead of having them for homework. This will discourage procrastination that could lead to a bad grade. We have always been taught that we can change anything we put our minds to, so please help us do so by considering re-thinking our homework schedules and amounts.
