Kwara, the state of Harmony, is a state in Western Nigeria. Its capital is the beautiful city of Ilorin. Kwara’s population size constitutes about 1.69% of the nation’s total population.
We are volunteers working on an education project with the organization VSO on the International Citizen Service (ICS) programme which is funded by the UK government. Our project involves us working in various junior secondary schools across the state and in partnership with the teaching staff to improve the quality of education for the students. Findings have shown that Kwara state is one of those with the lowest benchmark in the area of literacy due to poor teaching techniques adopted by teachers, owing to the fact that government pays less attention to the training and retraining of teachers, this has significantly affected the quality of education in the state.
In Kwara state there are about 1406 primary schools and 330 junior secondary schools with over 193673 students in the primary school and over 86081 students in the junior secondary schools (UBEC National and Regional Statistic. 2010).There are about 14216 primary school teachers and 3302 junior secondary school teachers (UBEC National and Regional Statistic. 2010) and it has come to our notice that the teachers are finding it very difficult to discharge their duties effectively due to the fact that they are being owed salaries ranging from 3 to 12 months.
This makes the achievement of our set goals very difficult as the cooperation of the teachers is an integral part of the programme. We have come together to discuss this issue and have decided to put forward this petition to help teachers within the state to be paid fairly and on time.
We ask of you to stand with us against teachers being owed their salaries by signing this petition to attract the attention of the government to the plight of the teachers, by doing this together we can make a huge difference for education in Kwara state. Teachers do not only deserve to be paid, but children all over the world deserve the right to quality education.
