Alexis Quintero started this petition to KUSD President Dan Wade

In schools they teach students about anti-bullying, safe sex, and eating healthy, but disregard the issue of dating abuse. They don't talk about the signs of dating violence or strategies to distinguish what's healthy and what's not in a relationship.

There are teenagers less than 14 choosing to date with no prior relationship experience. According to Barbara Poncelet, a psychiatric RN "One in 10 teen girls and one in 11 teen boys admits to having experienced physical violence in a dating relationship in the past year." The lack of support and education on dating violence results in teens accepting the act as innocent and "normal" behavior.

I was 14-15 when I had my first serious relationship. We would fight everyday that there would be screaming, crying, and swearing. He controlled who I talked to in and out of school. I believed this was normal because I was told it was "typical" for relationships to have fights. We departed 2 years later and I was left with a broken heart along with depression and low self-esteem. If I would've had support, I wouldn't have made the mistake of staying in the relationship. Eventually I found someone new who treats me with respect and treats me well.

Dan Wade and the rest of his board members should consider bringing awareness to middle and high schools to end teen dating violence. KUSD needs to educate young teens on the effects of dating violence and come up with strategies to stop it.
