Moderate Americans DC started this petition to Kurt Suzuki and

Dear Mr. Kurt Suzuki and Mr. Ryan Zimmerman:

As residents of the Washington, DC metropolitan area and fans of the Washington Nationals baseball team, we were dismayed to see Mr. Suzuki wear a “Make America Great Again” hat and to see Mr. Zimmerman praise President Donald Trump with the words “thank you for keeping everyone here safe in our country, and continuing to make America the greatest country to live in the world.”

It is one thing to attend a ceremony at the White House in honor of the team and another to openly praise the president who has demeaned a large portion of the population of the Washington, DC area and many players on the team with his words and actions.

We believe that with your incredibly busy schedules and focus on baseball, you may not be aware of some of these actions by the President. We hope that you will consider this and sincerely consider apologizing for publicly praising Trump.

Trump began his 2016 presidential campaign describing Mexican immigrants as “rapists” who are “bringing crime.” In June 2017, Trump said 15,000 recent immigrants from Haiti “all have AIDS” and that 40,000 Nigerians, once seeing the United States, would never “go back to their huts” in Africa. In July 2019, Trump suggested that four minority Democratic congresswomen, all of whom are American citizens and three of whom were born in the United States, should “go back” to “the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

The list could go on and on, but here is perhaps the worst example: Trump’s administration enforces a policy that has led to thousands of refugee families being separated from their children. Parents have been sent to jail while their children have been labeled “unaccompanied minors” and taken into government custody. In some cases, this means cages. Some have compared this practice to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

We all know that the Washington, DC region is made greater by immigrants and the Washington Nationals team is made greater by immigrants. Did you consider Trump’s words and policies toward immigrants when you wore his hat? Did you think about the safety of the children of refugees when you praised him for "keeping us safe" and "making our country great?"

We ask that you consider this now and that you consider making an apology to the people of the Washington, DC region for praising a president that has disrespected us directly with his words and actions.

Sincerely,

Washington, DC Area Residents and Washington Nationals Fans
