Super bowl Sunday. Almost feels as if it’s a holiday. Everyone gathers together on Sunday night to celebrate, watch the game, and simply share fond memories… and then it’s Monday. Everyone is required to go to work instead of having an opportunity to recover and discuss the highlights of last night’s game. How much fun is this for anyone?

Statistically speaking, history has demonstrated that the least productive day in the workplace is the day after the Super bowl, and that is reasonable — all people want to do is talk about the prior night’s game. As one can imagine, this applies just as much if not more to college students who have to get up for their 8am classes that they’re likely to skip due to exhaustion. There is no changing the night of the Super bowl, but there is a way to regain productivity, and that is by allowing students to have the day after the Super Bowl off.

There are many factors this year that especially play into potentially having this “holiday.” For one, giving students an opportunity to recover from the game and not have to worry about getting to class the following morning will promote the rest and relaxation needed to begin the week strong starting on Tuesday. Furthermore, for Ohio State specifically, the student body must go 7 straight weeks of classes, not getting a single day in February off. As a university who preaches students’ mental health, one could imagine that this setup is very taxing on a student’s health. Giving this day as a reprieve day would be an excellent opportunity for students to have a small break from classes.

Lastly, it’s the Cincinnati Bengals, one of our very own Ohio teams, in the Super Bowl! How exciting is it to see our own state represented. Surely that is enough reason to celebrate the occasion!
