Do you remember elementary school field trips? It was always something treasured. It's like the school equivalent of Christmas. Even lunch was some how more special. I would always beg my mom to give me a Lunchable, because that's the king of field trip foods. The question was never "What do you have for lunch?" It was always "What Lunchable did you get?" I don't know why it was this way. It didn't matter. It just was, and it's a part of Field Trip Day.
My little brother is 8 years old and in first grade. He loves dinosaurs and Legos and the color green. He's sweet and friendly and runs super fast. He also gets told "no" a lot more than other kids. You see, he has Celiac disease. This means he can't have gluten. It's in wheat, barely, and oats, among other things. It's really tough. Almost every aspect of his life is touched by it. Even field trips.
Lunchables currently has only one Gluten Free option (which still has a chance of cross contamination), the nachos. But that isn't a lunch. It's a snack. It isn't a pizza that you get to make your self. It isn't a make your own sub. It's chips, tomato puree (not even salsa), and cheese. It isn't a Field Trip Day lunch.
This is why I want Lunchables to make an allergen safe lunch deserving of the greatest of Field Trips. I want my little brother, and increasing numbers of other kids with allergies, to hear yes just a little bit more.
