Acceptable Athletic Attire

Acceptable Athletic Attire
Why this petition matters
As many of you know, King Philip Regional High School has recently made a rule stating the only proper gym attire is shorts or sweatpants, but how about leggings? Nope, banned. This has outraged many female students for we have our upcoming yoga unit and weight lifting unit (and let’s be honest, shorts are not the best idea for bending over). Also no v-neck t-shirts? Sorry are collar bones distracting for you? Many women wear leggings in a public gym, and it is an appropriate piece of apparel to wear while working out; therefore, not allowing women to wear leggings is discrimination. Since men are allowed to wear sweatpants this is very unfair. Besides, gym sweatpants for women are very hard to come by. Anyone in gym class should be allowed to wear leggings since leggings are sports apparel- many runners, athletes, Olympians, and body builders wear leggings to work out in and play their respective sports in, so why has KPHS banned leggings? In short it is a very sexist move. But why has the school outlawed leggings: to make sure students change into gym clothes? The problem there mostly lies with the boys who wear the same clothes to school as they wear to gym. The student handbook says nothing about leggings not being allowed in the dress code on page 34 and nothing about proper gym clothing in the physical education section on page 87.
