We are concerned residents of a residential community located along South Lakeshore Drive between Pentwater and Ludington in Mason County, Michigan. The population of this area is a mix of year-round residents, snowbirds, and seasonal folks staying in their summer cottages. There are very few businesses in the vicinity, and most operate seasonally. South Lakeshore Drive, part of the Lake Michigan Circle Tour, is a tree-lined scenic road winding through nature. Generations of residents have enjoyed our area with very few changes for almost a century.

Now, however, our South Lakeshore Drive neighborhood is being threatened with change!

An out-of-town developer has purchased a 7-acre parcel on the Lake Michigan shore where he is determined to build a for-profit commercial Adult Foster Care Facility. In 2017, the developer found a zoning loophole and has proposed a 24/7 year-round Adult Foster Care Facility with 4 individual commercial units, each housing 6 paying customers for a total of 24 clients. The developer is in final construction stages of the first unit for 6 clients and has advertised for occupants.

With development of this facility, we will all be affected by increased commercial traffic from 24/7 staffing, medical help, truck deliveries, and garbage dumpster haulers, etc. Other impacts of operating a for-profit facility within the residential area can be expected year-round. The door will have been opened to future commercial development that simply does not fit our rural peaceful community.

We are calling on all residents and friends of our Summit Township, South Lakeshore Drive neighborhood to join us in opposing the development of commercial uses in our neighborhood.

By signing our petition, you can declare your support for our effort to pursue changes in our zoning rules, including consideration of an overlay zone in the area of South Lakeshore Drive to prevent commercial development from proliferating in our residential community known for quiet homes and natural beauty.
