Amber Burns started this petition to KNOX COUNTY SCHOOLS and

In Knox County Schools the contact tracing and quarantine process is preventing our students from receiving the quality education they deserve. Currently, there are 138 students and 51 faculty that have tested positive, but there are 1,879 students and 219 faculty that have been sent home for unnecessary quarantining. This disruption to education should not be tolerated since Knox County schools are following all of the appropriate safety precautions set forth by the CDC to ensure our students and faculty members are in a safe environment.  Those that are quarantined are having to remain out of school for a total of 8+ days of school for each "exposure". Data globally, and also locally, confirms that children who are quarantined are not very likely to even get sick/test positive from a school "exposure".  We are asking that the CDC, state, local, and school board officials recognize the importance of education for our children now and for their future.  Our teachers and schools are essential to our children's education and the importance of in person learning is imperative for the health and overall wellbeing of our children.

Although, we acknowledge that Covid-19 has been deadly for some age groups, here in Knox County there have been zero deaths in the ages of 0-17.  There have been 23 hospitalizations in that same age range as of when this petition was drafted however, it has been made public that the reason those children are in the hospital may be unrelated to covid-19.  Within our community there have been many deaths due to mental health such as suicides in children as well as adults.  In addition, there are more families struggling to balance education for their children and work for parents.  Children are falling behind in their education and have failing grades since the start of the pandemic and school closings/quarantine process.  Loss of learning is causing a long term loss of life years in our children as calculated by some studies related to education and future costs and impact.

We as parents, families, tax payers, and other members of the community do not want our children and families to have to spend extra time or resources making up for learning lost from the actions of our local officials and their response to covid-19.  We want our HEALTHY children and school personnel to be allowed to remain at school/work so our children can get the education that they need by the wonderful teachers and staff who are qualified and so great at their jobs.
