The dress code in Farragut Middle School is discriminating against girl students. When boys can take off their shirts, girls cannot wear a tank top, crop-tops, head apparel, anything showing your shoulders, pants which are shorter than half your thigh (which bigger ones are impossible to find), and leggings. This legging rule has been the last straw for me.

Google states that "1) A dress code promotes a more serious school atmosphere that emphasizes academics and promotes good behavior." I don't see how not wearing leggings or tank tops creates "a more serious school atmosphere." Honestly, they're just adding new rules, bad ones, if I may add, just so "boys" won't be "distracted." If they really decided to make a consistent dress code, ripped jeans wouldn't even be allowed. But they are; many girls wear them. This proves that the school isn't even doing this for us girls' safety, but through random complaints they get from the boys' parents.

The text also affirms, "2) Dress codes have proven to increase student achievement by encouraging students to concentrate more on their studies and less on their wardrobe." Although wardrobe choices aren't a bad reason in general, it won't help a lot of girls. The school's got to remember that there are lots of different girls of different body types. In my case and a lot of others, I play a lot of sports. Our thighs get thick and we don't fit into other pants. We're not choosing to distract the boys, but we're choosing to be comfortable.

Why aren't you teaching the boys to not be distracted instead of teaching us girls to not be comfortable?
