KMart stays open regular hours on both Thanksgiving Day and until midnight on Christmas Eve. Employees of KMart working these days miss spending time with family that is uncalled for when you take into consideration the impact on employee moral and very low sales on those days because most people are with family. It has been my experience that staying open these days creates discord at the work place and places an emotional strain on families. An alternative could be changing these days to volunteers only or abbreviated hours of operation. Last year on Thanksgiving Day I sold things like only one pair of socks to a customer and only one flannel shirt to another, etc. These items could have easily been purchased the day before or the day after the holiday. Customers repeatedly comment they are surprised Kmart was even opened. Does Kmart really benefit from being open on these days?
