Fixing the adversarial Australian party system
This petition had 22 supporters
The Australian political party system is at an all time low. However, the key questions "Why is this so?" and, even more, " How can it be fixed?", are not heard. It appears that commentators have no ideas as to how the country can move away from this situation. It appears that this has much to do with the embedded Anglo-political culture, more than anything else. Of course there are remedies, PR Party List Systems. They are found essentially outside that culture.
This petition aims at changing the electoral system from the single-member-electoral-district system, which tends to produce a two-major party system in opposition to another, to a multi-party system resulting from multi-member districts, requiring parties to find majority representation through coalition government. It is used in 86 countries, including New Zealand, since 1996.
