  • Silver Rock Beach - sunchairs and umbrellas create hazard for sporting beach users

Kitesurfing is a fast-growing sport which has been around in Barbados for approximately 20 years and getting more popular every year.   It has generated many new visitors to the island as well as many repeat guests who choose Barbados over other Caribbean islands due to the excellent kitesurf conditions at Silver Rock beach in Christ Church.

Due to the prevailing wind direction, Silver Rock beach hosts over 90% of all the kitesurfing and windsurfing activities in Barbados.  The beach was never really popular with the general public and visitors as there were few amenities nearby, the sea is usually rough, the wind blows the sand into your face and there are no trees on the beach for shade.  These conditions make it perfect for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Kitesurfing is considered an extreme sport and can be very dangerous to unwary beach users.  One significant danger is the long (up to 30 metres) flying lines which the kites are attached to.  The lines have a breaking strength of 500 pounds and are very thin.  When under tension the lines are as sharp as knives.  In the event that the lines tangle with an object, the kite can get out of control and create a life-threatening hazard!

In the recent past, Brian Talma of ‘De Action Shop’ was issued a license to rent beach chairs and umbrellas on this beach.  The already small launching and landing area has been significantly reduced by the positioning of the beach chairs and umbrellas.

We, the undersigned, consider it unsafe to encourage casual beach users by placing umbrellas and beach chairs on this beach in the middle of the very active windsurfing and kitesurfing launching and landing area and we consider it against the interest of the kitesurfing community of Barbados. The sunchairs and umbrellas can get entangled with kites and strings as well as windsurfing sails can be blown on them, thus endangering the general public and all other windsurfers and kitesurfers.
