School Bus Stop Cameras
School Bus Stop Cameras
As a parent of young children who ride a school bus, I would like to see cameras installed to catch drivers who pass school buses in the region. I have put in numerous police reports with drivers passing the bus while my children are boarding it. I have done this for years and it feels like it is not making a difference. know many other parents that feel this frustration as well. I can't get all plates and neither can the bus driver. Parents should just be at the bus with their children enjoying the conversation and feel that the bus stop is safe and does not need to be manned with adult supervision. All children should feel safe boarding a school bus. We have enough fatalities and injuries to children due to drivers failing to stop for school buses. There is a program in Ontario that is free and will not cost taxpayers anything.
The Program is called Bus Patrol. The company installs the cameras at no cost and a percentage of the revenue generated from the ticketed offenders goes to supporting the program. The data from this program shows that 98 percent of violators do not receive a second ticket. My child was in a severe MVA and the cost is enormous to support anyone in a severe collision. I don't want anyone to go through what my family has been through either. The busing company should not be the only insurer to bear that burden and neither should the parents. The driver who caused injuries should be accountable. At least with cameras, they can get a license plate of the driver.
Pierre Ranger lost his brother Adam who was five years old crossing Highway 17 to return home from school. The driver didn’t stop despite the flashing red lights and stop sign extended on the bus. He is chairman of the Let’s Remember Adam Campaign that has advocated for safer student transportation for most of the past two decades. Pierre and his mother have worked to get the laws changed to allow for cameras to be on buses. We have Pierre and his family to thank for these changes to the laws. It is a win-win situation to get camera's on school buses! Please sign and share to get cameras installed in the Waterloo Region and area! Our children should feel safe!
