Why this petition matters

While Lord Kitchener was the face of Britain during the first world war and a galvanizing figure, of all historical figures- he has one of the most controversial pasts. Lord Kitchener started the world's first modern concentration camp system during the first Boer War against the civilian populations present there. Sans Kitchener, the Orange Free state's and South African republic's right to govern their own affairs may have yet been realized. Kitchener was instrumental in conquering the Sudan, at the time defending against an encroaching British Empire. During said conquest, Queen Victoria herself lamented the man who had "avenged Gordon's death", in desecrating the Mahdi's tomb by blowing it up and killing wounded soldiers who fought the British. Among other duties, including his within India and the first world war, he wasn't the most pleasant individual.

Berlin was renamed Kitchener in 1916 due to distaste with the name Berlin (something much less controversial than the man, Kitchener). In a similar fashion, is it time to look for a new name for the city separate from such a historically divisive individual?
