Petition for the Resignation of Kirsten Baesler

Petition for the Resignation of Kirsten Baesler
Petition for the Resignation of Kirsten Baesler
The intention of this petition is to formally request the resignation of the North Dakota State Superintendent, Kirsten Baesler.
Kirsten has recently been arrested on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence, but has yet to be formally charged, as of the date of publication for this petition. She has admitted fault, as politically as possible, but has yet to see any real consequences for her action.
This is a concern to the general public of North Dakota. Kirsten Baesler’s behavior has continued to escalate since her time in office, and she continues to find herself in trouble with the law. Because of her status, she has been able to minimize, and even completely avoid consequences for her actions. Below is a listing of previous incidents:
Misdemeanor Theft, 1997 (Prior to her time in office). Mandan, ND.
Simple Assault, 2015 (Charges were dropped). Mandan, ND.
Domestic Dispute, 2015 (Charges were dropped). Orlando, FL.
Care Required, 2018. (Guilty Plea Agreement). Mandan, ND.
Care Required, 2020 (DUI still pending). Burleigh County, ND.
Driving Under the Influence is a major issue within the State of North Dakota. Many innocent lives have been lost, due to individuals driving while intoxicated. A state effort, Vision Zero North Dakota, is actively working to spread awareness, and reduce the number of incidents across the state. How can we hope that any state effort will be effective, if we cannot hold individuals accountable? Thankfully, no one was injured by Kirsten’s decision to drink and drive, but she made the same decision as many others have in this state, that has ended in tragedy.
The most concerning issue, is the clear and present pattern of behavior. We have enabled her actions, by sweeping these incidents under the rug, without consequences. This incident of Driving Under the Influence is not a one-time occurrence, it is simply the first time she has been caught. This is not the example we want to be setting for our children. This is not acceptable behavior, regardless of position or status.
With this resignation, we would encourage Kirsten to spend the time she needs to get help. Recovery and rehabilitation are possible, but at this time, Kirsten needs to step away from her responsibilities, and focus on her well being. It would be a disservice to her, to the Department of Public Instruction, to the victims of DUI related accidents, and to every person in this state for Kirsten to remain as the State Superintendent.
