Evening-Weekend Nursing Program

An e-mail was recently sent out to over 1,000 students at Kirkwood Community College that the evening-weekend nursing program was going to be cut because of a lack of students interested in the program. My classmates and I would not have been able to go through the nursing program if it wasn't for the evening-weekend format, as many of us have families or work full-time. The evening-weekend program is making it possible for many of us to get a degree that may not otherwise be possible due to inconvenient class times at other schools. Now the evening-weekend program is being cut, even though we are attending a community college where many students are "non-traditional". Fortunately they can not make us switch to the program during the day so my class will be allowed to finish the program in the evenings, as will one more class that started this fall. After that there are no options in the region to get a nursing degree on a strictly evening-weekend schedule. Area hospitals are in desperate need of RNs, many are hiring LPNs now just to make it through... the nursing shortage isn't going away and having an evening-weekend program makes it possible for more people to return to school for a degree.
