A formal apology to the KCL Somali community and beyond.

We here at the KCL Somali Society have and always will strive to connect and promote the success of young Somalis in the UK. We ensure that they are supported in their time at King's, they have access to support their KCL and wider community, and showcase the best of our culture. We are sad to write that in an already polarised climate following political sensations such as Brexit and the Trump Muslim Ban, shameful bigotry and stigmatisation of minority groups exist in our own community at King's. The Muslim Ban executed under the Trump Administration legitimatises the verbal and physical violence geared towards minorities from backgrounds such as Somalia, Syria, Sudan and the subcontinent of South Asia.

Adam Perkins is a reminder that where bigotry and Islamophobia is empowered through political systems, it is further justified and adopted as a legitimate ideology. Despite Perkins' racist and divisive statements that specific groups are "statistically" likely to cause more crime is both redundant and toxically offensive. Statistics is nothing without context, yet Perkins, despite this, exasperates the shocking level of hatred and ostracisation of minority groups, in particular Somalis as expressed on his public Twitter forum.

Somali students have expressed hurt and anger that such educator and peer could express so much stigmatised and ad hoc rhetoric directed towards them, fellow Muslims and black communities based on nothing but unevaluated statistics. To critique and express opinion is a freedom of speech, however to expresses a dichotomy that entrenches racism and divisive intolerance should be unacceptable at King's. We as students at King's demand a formal apology and investigation at such abhorrent views expressed by a KCL academic.

Please sign in order to show solidarity against hidden Islamophobia and intolerance.

Sincerely,

KCL Somali Soceity
