Tēnā koe Kimiora Williams,

This letter is from those of us in Tauranga Moana who felt deep mamae when we saw how you were received at the recent ratepayer’s hui for speaking te reo Māori. We believe Tauranga is no place for such overt displays of anti-Māori behaviour. We want you to know that there are many who do not share or condone the sentiment of those who booed and heckled you at that hui.

We applaud you for using te reo Māori. The language is a taonga - its wairua is rich and it connects us to our whenua. We are lucky to have it as one of Aotearoa’s official languages and it is a blessing to hear te reo spoken. Furthermore, the oppression of te reo Māori is an injustice and a violation of Te Tiriti.

Our hope is to see Tauranga Moana shift towards a place where mātauranga Māori can flourish, te reo Māori is spoken abundantly, and treated like the taonga it is.

As you’ll know, Tauranga Moana means safe anchorage. We want you to know that we tautoko any movement towards making this a culturally safe city for tangata whenua, where racism is stamped out and left in the history books, right where it belongs.

Ngā mihi nui,
