Cayla Burton started this petition to Representative Kim Schrier and

I am a graduate occupational therapy student (OTS) trying to gain support to have stronger preventative programs available in lower income communities to decrease child abuse cases. These programs will provide these communities with education about child development, parental resilience, social connections, need-based support, emotional and social development of children. There is a report of child abuse every 10 seconds, therefore there is a growing need for this to be implemented (Child Abuse Statistics, 2014). However, right now during COVID-19 times, this bill needs to be passed more than ever because children aren't attending school. Therefore, mandated reporters aren't seeing these children and aren't reporting these dangerous situations. This bill H.R. 2480 was created by Kim Schrier and has currently passed in the house and is awaiting passing in the senate. By signing this petition, this bill with receive more attention and move closer to becoming a federal law. Currently, this bill is in the Senate specifically in the health, education, labor, and pensions. These children deserve to be in a healthy and non-abusive home and as occupational therapists we can provide them with the resources to get help. Ot's also have the skills and knowledge to be able to educate these communities. If you would like more information about this bill you can look at the link attached.
