Call to Action to Ban No Knocks
Mar 23, 2021 —
Grassroots Law Project Texas-
HB 1272 would ban no-knock warrants statewide! It's been referred to the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, but as we know, most bills in state lege don't get a hearing. The Committee Chair has to call for a hearing on each bill and commonly relies on other committee members' requests for which bills get hearings. According to the ACLU 80% of no-knock raids are used for nonviolent drug crimes, and they disproportionately target low income communities, Black communities, and communities of color They're dangerous and unnecessary, and even plenty of law enforcement officials are against them. Here's even more info about no-knock warrants
We need you to do three things!
Call members of the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee and call for a hearing on HB 1272!! This is live now! You can leave a message tonight and call again tomorrow! Call (512) 883-8959 to get connected to ALL of their offices!
Be sure to say something like this;
"I'm calling members of the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee to ask you to hold a hearing on HB 1272, a bill to ban no-knock raids
No-knock raids are over-militarized, dangerous, and ineffective. They are dangerous for everyone involved, including police. No-knock raids disproportionately target communities of color, erode public trust in law enforcement, and they often rely on bad intelligence. Please encourage a hearing for HB 1272 in the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee"
