Franklin High School is the only public high school in Baltimore County with an eight period per day schedule. All other BCPS high schools have an A day/B day schedule with longer class times which enables students to have more time in a class period with their teachers and more time to get work completed. Things need to change for Franklin High School NOW.

Here is the issue. Several years ago Franklin High and Franklin Middle School shared a French class, so the two schools had to have the same bell schedule. This has not been the case for over five years at minimum. At least four years ago, the principal at the middle school indicated that both schools were working on changing it but that it took a couple years to get set up. Deer Park Middle School, according to my sources, changed a similar problem over one summer.  I was under the impression that this change would have taken place this year (2020-2021)  but then Covid hit.

I spoke with Franklin High School’s Principal McCusker in person on 5/26 and asked him about  the schedule for next year.  He informed me that the BCPS school board instructed principals to revert to their 2019 schedule for fall 2021. However, he then added that they could have changed the schedule but would have to "jump through many hoops.” He told me he discussed this with his department heads and they chose to not make the change.

It is important to note that Franklin High made the switch to semester classes in August of 2020 in a very short window because virtual learning was about to happen. Replacing an eight period day schedule with an A/B schedule for students this fall is a similar task that CAN be accomplished. Red tape is the only obstacle. Certainly, last summer’s red tape was a burden understandably circumvented due to the pandemic. Now similar red tape is being used as an excuse for not serving the best interests of students. The best possible schedule for our children’s education is paramount after this difficult year and we insist upon it. Our eyes are now open.

After such a tumultuous year, an eight period day would be detrimental to students. They have performed well under the circumstances with the modified four period  semester schedule. BCPS is always discussing equity in learning.  Where is the equity when every other student in a BCPS high school is going to have an A/B schedule except for our students at FHS? The change back to the old schedule will not be conducive to instruction. We want a schedule change.  That old schedule is overwhelming. Our children waste precious instructional time in the halls changing classes and getting settled once class begins. Then the end of class bell rings. Other BCPS high schools do not want this schedule for good reasons. Transparency is needed where this issue is concerned, as we, the parents, expect our leaders to make a case for the betterment of our children to the BCPS Board of Education and Superintendent Williams. Please do this on our behalf.

We have a PTSA meeting on Monday, June 7th, where the schedule topic will be brought up. I am happy to give you the link for registration so you can attend to voice your concerns.

Please let your feelings be known!
