Reform kidney donor process to prevent needless denials for willing donors & recipients.
Reform kidney donor process to prevent needless denials for willing donors & recipients.
Almost 100,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant in the US at any given time. At the same time almost 3,500 usable kidneys are discarded each year because of broken policies.
When a potential transplant recipient has a willing living donor, hospitals will evaluate both in accordance with a standard scoring model. This model purports to protect the safety of all involved but in reality it discourages hospitals from taking reasonable risks in light of the alternative outcomes possible for a patient in need.
This petition was started after my partner was denied a transplant from a willing living donor (her sister) and died a few months later from complications of her disease, while hoping for a transplant elsewhere. I believe her death was avoidable and she deserved the hope her sister was so kindly willing to give to her.
