Add manual battery preheating for Kia e-Niro, Hyundai Kona + (solved: Ioniq5 & EV6)
Add manual battery preheating for Kia e-Niro, Hyundai Kona + (solved: Ioniq5 & EV6)

We would need to add manual battery preheat option to our electric vehicles (car infotainment & UVO/Bluelink app) to prevent from "Coldgate". Coldgate is battery protection for cold weather. Adding manual battery preheating saves Kia eNiro/eSoul and Hyundai Kona/Ioniq EV owners a lots of time on DC chargers during winter times.
Charging time from 20% to 80% in 42 minutes (in summer) is more than doubled in winter - increased up to 1.5 hours. Long road trips in the winter are very inconvenient due to low speed charging. Also charging on chargers with pay-for-minute is very expensive. Some EVs have manual battery preheat option or automatic - navigate to charger (like Tesla). This is really helpfull and should be implemented to Kia / Hyundai EVs as well as "Manual battery preheat" option, which can be set before going to charger.
UltraFastDC option is for ultra fast chargers (60-350kW). There is required minimum battery temperature 25°C for optimal charging speed (max. 75kW/200A). FastDC option is for standard 50kW chargers. Required minimum battery temperature is lower here (15°C) for charging without coldgate (max. 50kW/125A). Manual battery preheat should be limited to max. 60 minutes as HV battery drain prevention.
Worldwide for all models with PTC battery heater:
- Kia e-Niro (EV) MY19-21
- Kia e-Soul (EV)
- Hyundai Kona Electric MY18-21
- Hyundai Ioniq Electric MY20+
- (221021 Solved: BMS update available via dealership!)
Both new models Hyundai Ioniq5 and Kia EV6 have similar problems with coldgate
Thank you very much Kia and Hyundai
