My brother lives in a small town in Oklahoma and is the Public school system there. They are one of the best people in my life. So when they told me that their school wasn’t letting them wear what they wanted for their panel picture, I wasn’t pleased. Honestly, I got angry. They were told to wear the boa, or not be pictured, and misgendered by being told “tux for boys, boa for girls”. In 2020, we are adapting to new identities, but some schools aren’t adapting in the way needed for the student body. All that was being asked was permission to not have to wear something they wouldn’t be comfortable in. They weren’t asking anything outlandish, just to wear the “boys” uniform for their panel photo. This may seem small to some, but if we let this slide, what comes next? Making a trans girl wear the suit as to “honor the tradition of [redacted] schools”? In my mind, it’s a no brainer, let people wear the uniform they want to. If a person requests to wear a tux, let them. They’d much rather be remembered correctly than be remembered as someone they weren’t. It’s still the uniform! What does it matter? If someone wants to go out of uniform, that’s one thing. But to deny someone their comfort, while the request is still in uniform, now that’s just unfair. Please share this if you have the ability Please spread the word. This is important, because if this doesn’t change, not only my brother will have to chose between being “not pictured” or being misrepresented, but others too. If we can’t change this for them, at least we’ll get a change for the next person. Which could be your brother, sister or sibling. We need the Oklahoma schools to let students wear what they want for their senior panel photos
