PETITION FOR ACCESSIBILITY TO DONATE BLOOD IN THE PILBARA REGION

To the President and members of the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled

We, the undersigned residents of Port Hedland and South Hedland and surrounding communities; strongly object to the fact that we have nowhere to donate blood. According to the 2016 census current populations are: City of Karratha: 21,473, down 1426 from 2011, Town of Port Hedland: 14,469 down from 15,046 in 2011, Newman 4567 shrunk by 28 since 2011, East Pilbara 10,591 down from 11,950 in 2011. Tom Price have 5,000 or more residents and our sister city Karratha has over 20,000 residents, all of whom will travel the few hours to donate. As you may be aware there is a blood shortage crisis in our country, this needs to be fixed. We have many local residents to the Pilbara region that would love the chance to donate without having to travel 1,700Kms to do so or spend over $500 on a one way flight to Perth

As you are aware, the Pilbara is an important economy within WA and is the source of many jobs outside Perth. It has a thriving industrial and commercial base which intern gives us thousands of Fly in Fly out people whom also would love to donate whilst they are up here working with not much else to do in their spare time. It is important this situation succeeds for the future growth in this region and more broadly in WA. Here in Hedland alone we only have access to minimal blood,  a recent discovery notes that if there was a mass emergency out of town the little blood we have goes to that one emergency therefore leaving Hedland with no blood for and future emergencies or situations.

With this in mind, we are concerned that if you don’t give us this opportunity to donate our blood locally that WA may indeed continue to be in a minimal blood crisis and put the lives of our state at risk. We would like to see;

A blood donations and screening centre opened up here in Hedland
Bring the Red Cross Blood donations van back to travel the Pilbara.
The blood crisis in Australia, Western Australia to be no longer in issue.
We also consider the government should do whatever it can to get fresh supplies in our region and the availability of such to our residents.
