BLM Mira Mesa started this petition to Kevin Falconer and

After the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, millions of Americans have been fighting for equality, to end police brutality and racism. In the past month we have seen thousands of protests across the nation, racist and confederate statues being taken down, justice for hundreds of black people murdered at the hands of police, and much, much more.

Along with this, many cities have painted the powerful phrase, Black Lives Matter, on their streets. It began with it being painted in Washington DC, in front of the White House, and later on many other streets. Examples include Dallas TX, Albany NY, Sacramento CA, Charlotte NC, Boston MA, Philadelphia PA, and more.

Although Mira Mesa may not be as big as places like Downtown San Diego, we could be the first to do this in San Diego. Mira Mesa Boulevard is the largest street in our community, and having it represent an important movement would be amazing.

By the end of July, we hope to have enough signatures to get permission to go through with this. A portion of the street will be blocked off (near the shopping center with Vons, cars will still be allowed into the shopping center, or can take a detour around the blocked off portion) for a day or two, and volunteers will be allowed to come in and help paint. It does not have to be generic text - it can be colorful, it can show important people (MLK, Martha P. Johnson, etc.) anything appropriate is allowed.

This is just one small step to solve racial inequality, but hopefully it will help pave the way for other to follow in our footsteps, to sign petitions, to protest, and to fight for equality.
